What is Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy, also known as talk therapy or counseling, is a process in which a trained mental health professional (e.g., a psychologist, psychiatrist, or therapist) works with an individual, couple, or group to help them understand and manage their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. The goal of psychotherapy is to help people improve their mental health, cope with life challenges, and build healthier relationships.

Psychotherapy can be helpful for a wide range of mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, trauma, eating disorders, substance abuse, and relationship problems. The specific techniques and approaches used in therapy may vary depending on the therapist’s training, the client’s needs, and the goals of treatment.
